High School Applicants:

Although there are many different types of entrepreneurs, successful entrepreneurs tend to share certain traits.  Discuss what you think are the most important characteristics of a successful entrepreneur and explain how you demonstrate those characteristics.  You may also refer to how you have or will utilize those characteristics to be an entrepreneur in the future.  The essay should be two – three pages.

Undergraduate/Graduate School Applicants:

A solid business plan is a key factor in the success of a business.  The idea, the rationale or need for the business, and the start-up team are all essential parts of a good business plan.  In a two – four page essay, please develop a mini-business plan.  There is no need to include numbers or specific data. Lack of business experience or hard research will not be counted against applicants.  Focus on entrepreneurial thinking and communication.  Your mini-business plan should include the following:

  • An explanation and description of the product or service your company will provide.  It can be something completely new or an improvement or variation on an existing product/service.

  • A brief rationale for why this business is needed and why it will succeed.

  • Your marketing ideas on how to identify the target audience; how to reach them and to promote your service or product to them.

  • A description of the type of people you would have on the start-up team.  You do not need to have specific names; a specific description of the skills and strengths of each person is acceptable.
