Chairman Message
Connecting the Dots
It’s my great surprise to be elected as chairman for 2011-2012. I feel it exemplifies SCMJ’s broad mindedness to cultivate new leadership and the strength of a core leadership that consisted of current Executive Board of Directors, Board of Directors, past Chairpersons, advisors and founding members. Of course I must thank 2010-2011 Chairwoman Lu Lu Wang, for giving all her heart to enhance the reputation of SCMJ both locally and globally. She did her fullest in the midst of economic turmoil to promote the many aspects of SCMJ functions, including community networking, the CEO Forum, our seminars, scholarship program and corporate sponsorships. I would also like to congratulate her for being elected as one of the seven Monte Jade Global Directors (全球玉山執行委員). We are very proud of her new role representing SCMJ in the Monte Jade Global organization.
The essence of SCMJ is the friendship among its members that inspires the teamwork to promote its mission. Beyond our interests and focus in science, technology and entrepreneurship, this friendship cements our individual strengths and enhances the growth of SCMJ.
My goal for 2011-2012 is to connect [the] dots. If a single dot represents an individual, then connecting two dots establishes a network. Friendships are built and strengthen when a network of relationships is continuously cultivated. 2012 will be the 10th anniversary of SCMJ. To pave the way for our celebration, I have set the following goals for the next twelve months:
Connecting [the] Dots in S. Cal Science and Technology Business Community
• The S. California Science and Technology business community is unique compared to regions covered by other Monte Jade chapters. SCMJ will continue to reach out to this business community creatively through the network of SCMJ Directors and corporate sponsors.
Connecting [the] Dots Among Members
• SCMJ is on Linkedin and Facebook! Social media will be one of our key tools to create networks and broadcast news to our members.
• Besides smaller mixer events, we will definitely have another CEO Forum, which was well received by over 150 plus attendees in 2010.
Connecting [the] Dots from SCMJ’s Past
• SCMJ’s continuity has always been upheld by our founders and past chairpersons. Many of them do not hold current SCMJ positions, but they continue to play advisory roles actively. It’s important that we tap into their wisdom and experience to plan for the next ten years.
Connecting [the] Dots between Generations
• With SCMJ on the threshold of succession into the next ten years, we must create objectives and efforts to provide the platform for the 1.5th and 2nd generations of Gen X, Gen Y and even Gen Z (the Internet Generation) of young entrepreneurs , scientists, and technologists. Many of them might not be ready to shine in the marketplace, but SCMJ’s aggregate wisdom can help them to expedite their progress.
There are also many administrative tasks to fulfill, such as a by-law review, membership database review, corporate sponsor invitation, and others. No way can I accomplish these all by myself. I am confident, however, that I can count on the support of our directors, including newly-elected Vice Chairmen Ming Lai Lai and Julian Chan. I ask them, I ask you, to please join me on this exciting journey!
